Suicide prevention – The interviewer must pay close attention when interviewing a client who appears depressed. Depression has a significant link to suicide with more than 65% of suicides each year linked to depression. One goal that every health professional should have is to strive to obtain all the information when screening a client for depression. There are many assessment tools available today to help health professions pick up on any signs of problems. Allow the client ample time to answer questions and talk about their concerns and problems. The health professional must be alert to any signs of suicidal ideation in persons with established risk factors. The health provider must be able to ask questions when clients say they want to end there lives, then determine if the client would need a referral to a mental health professional.
