Increased Interest in Forensics

by

Over the last few years there has been a marked increase in the interest of forensics. Colleges and universities have shown a steady increase in the enrollment of such courses (See San Diego Union Tribune Sept. 13, 2004 “CSI Spurs Campus Forensics Scene”.) Shows like CSI and its spin-offs have been credited with this increased interest, but is this really a good thing? All too often TV shows make lifestyles, including those of forensic investigators, appear glamorous. TV shows select exceptionally attractive people to play roles to keep the audience interested and the victims are usually just as attractive. Cases are wrapped up by the end of the hour and everyone has done a great job. Do the young students entering into this field believe that’s how it’s really going to be? If so, they’re in for a rude awakening.
