Forensic Nursing and Mental Health Assessment

by

Forensic nursing within itself is a new entity in the nursing profession. It has also become highly utilized in the area of mental health nursing. It is becoming an important part of that specialty of nursing because diseases involving mental health do closely link with people who take part in crimes. It is the job of the nursing professional to not only do a head-to-toe assessment of the physiological status of the client, but to thoroughly assess the mental health status of the client. Mental health is frequently overlooked or considered less important in the health assessment; this is especially true if the client is presenting to the health care facility for a non-mental health issue. In areas where the client is known to be involved in criminal activity; it will be very important for the nurse to assess and acknowledge mental health. These observations can potentially lead to helpful information in situations where a forensic nurse or team is involved.
