I wrote the original article If I had a son he’d look like Trayvon. I am glad to hear that public officials are saying the same thing I said. That is the Trayvon Zimmerman case should not be tried in the media, but in the judicial system.

I blame part of this on the media. The media did not have to release and discuss photos of George Zimmerman when he was first arrested. The media outlet I read and saw, discussed there were no signs of trauma on Zimmerman. Now, from official police and hospital reports Zimmerman is said to have trauma.

This change of “statements of facts” can be avoided by letting the judicial system handle the Trayvon Martin George Zimmerman case.

Torture

Torture has been a part of society since documented history, so we must assume that it was in place even before that. Torture is the willful violation of an individual for any purpose; whether it is spite, anger, retribution, hate, coercion, or deep-seated mental disturbances. This is only a small list of the many reasons why one person would misuse another. Torture can be physical. Some examples of this include painful suspension of body parts, dental manipulation, beating, painful manipulation of the body, suffocation, drugs, electrocution, mutilation and burns. This could lead to deformities, physical dysfunction and infections as well as psychological problems. Torture can be emotional. This would include harassment, denigration, debasement, constant criticism and neglect, to name a few. This leads to poor self-esteem and emotional distress as well as loss of the ability to participate in the usual effective daily functioning. Psychological torture also affects family functioning and parenting skills and promotes social withdrawal. It also causes the individual to withdraw from active participation in his usual community activities. Another form of torture is sexual. Nonconsensual sex is the denigration and loss of self-esteem of the individual in addition to the added risk of an unwanted pregnancy. It also spreads STDs. Other forms of torture are the mass brutalization of a community. This would include violent actions or mass executions, use of weapons ad-lib, and slavery or abduction of children, forcing them into the militia. It would include the destruction of the communities’ facilities such as homes, and clinics. This leads to decreased access to healthcare increasing the risk of disease and epidemics. I will add some far reaching causes of death for Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. These include fame and entertainment industry pressures. I and others have a part to play. We demand a lot from other entertainers such as Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. It seems that with each next performance, we demand more than the previous performance.

I think of my job. If I do great work as a forensic nurse, I will receive praise and a plague. I receive applause from the community for solving tough cases. Yet, the community and my bosses expect more. I give more. Again, everyone expects more. The cycle keep repeating.

Maybe we as the public should not push our great entertainers to the brink of death.

Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson, we miss you. We were glad you were a part of our lives.

My vote is no, the public should not be involve with the investigation and monitoring of the investigation of the death of young man Trayvon Martin. Look at how the video of the Robert Zimmerman at the police station is handled. First it was said on the news that it did not appear Mr. Zimmerman had wounds. After video enhancement, it is said the Mr. Zimmerman now has wounds.

The professional investigators should be allowed to do their jobs without “backseat drivers” giving directions. It is a certainty that the professional investigators will be double checking each other. Thus, there is no need of the public double checking.

Watching Golf with Dad

Even before I started working at a country club, I was a golf fan. I had never played the game but my father and brother are avid golfers. Until I began working in the environment, I shared their love of the game by watching the tournaments with my dad on Sundays. When he heard I had accepted a position as director of membership and marketing at a one hundred year old, reputable club where some of his friends were members, he insisted that I learn the game. He even bought me a used set of clubs. I took some lessons but I still have not played an actual round of golf. It has been ten years. I do still watch the tournaments with my dad though. Sometimes before I head over to his neck of the woods I will pull up http://www.ExpertSatellite.com/ to see what options we will have when I get there. It is a great way to spend an afternoon with my father who, because of his health, can no longer play the game!

I wholeheartedly disagree with your position that we should not be public in our protest. And that we should follow the slow governmental procedures regarding public injustices.

If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon also. I also am an Afro-American working for a governmental agency handling forensics.

One big recent example of a need for public participation, is with the pilot who had a meltdown on a JetBlue plane. Are you saying, we as citizens should not do something about a public injustice? Should we have called the governmental authorities and let them handle it? Should we let the scene run its course, then contact the authorities after the incident? I say no. I say when there is a danger to ourselves and others, we should react. When that danger is immediately before our eyes, we should react. Or whether that dangers is before us politically, morally, ethically, or socially we should react. Social injustice can cause just as much harm as physical injustice (killing).

Forensic Photography Recently I had the opportunity to document a child abuse case and follow through with the incident from triage straight through resolution. I actually had the opportunity to put to practical use what I have been studying in the texts. Although obtaining photographs is not new to our facility, we do have a stricter policy and procedure in place, including a photo log that has to be documented along with the digital camera cassette. These are sent to medical records for development and labeling. Although the child had five injuries from a supposed fall off a couch against a coffee table, the injuries were circumferential about the skull. We measured and documented all the wounds and ended up taking twelve photographs to get good resolution of some of the sites. In retrospect, however, I realize that we should have had the tape measure in the picture itself. That is something I will address next time I take pictures. We obtained consent from the mother (which was documented), obtained the investigator’s name, CPS worker name, etc., and otherwise I think we did a fairly good job. In the end, the officer felt he had enough of a case to arrest the significant other of the child’s mother for abuse. Since all the injuries were either abrasions or ecchymotic areas, only “before” photos were taken, i.e. before the CT scan, since no intervention other than antibiotic ointment was needed. Supposedly, per the mother’s initial report, the child, who was 15 months old, had fallen off the couch and hit her head on the coffee table, sustaining and abrasion above her left eye. She also had a 3 cm ecchymotic area on her sphenoid wing. This is a believable story. However, on examination, I noticed, an ecchymotic area laterals to her right orbit, petechial abrasions on the inner auricle (not on the pinna at all) of her right ear, and a 4 cm petechial-like abrasion on her right occiput. When I questioned the mother about this, she calmly responded that “she falls a lot.” I asked her if she was delayed in her walking, and she said yes. To me, this was unusual. Most toddlers are up and running by this time. Even my youngest son, who had 2 older siblings who loved to carry him around, was running the halls by this time. I had been concerned because my oldest was walking at 8 months, while this one didn’t feel compelled to start until 13 months, but then there was no stopping him! Her story just did not make sense to me. The ear injury was also odd. How can a child only injure the inside of the ear without abrading the pinna? For this reason, I took about 3 shots of the ear alone. The digital cameras are nice because they have the close up feature to focus and we got some really good shots. I am an Afro-American and proud of it. If I had a son he’d look like Trayvon.

I am also a forensic nurse. This is not going to be easy to say. The parents of Trayvon Martin and the community should not make a media protest against the legal system. A protest can be made in a personal method. I realize that there a questions about the Sanford Police Department handling of the case. But there are governmental methods to make the protest known.

It is possible the forensic teams, FL State Attorney’s office, U.S. Justice Department, and others may show the shooting of Trayvon Martin as not unjust and not racially motivated. This type of announcement will be difficult to emotionally accept.

If the above announcement is made, this will hurt our Afro-American community when we need to address similar injustices. There have been and will continue to be factual and provable injustices.

If there is an announcement saying that the youth Trayvon Martin’s death in unjust, this will bring some emotional relief to the family and community. This announcement with its investigation could and can be obtain by the governmental and procedural methods established.

Legalization of Marijuana, comment

I saw the Judge Judy show yesterday. I don’t like the way she and the guest made fun of marijuana growers. It is legal for us to grow weed in California. I would have thought Judge Judy would realize and accept this especially since she tapes her shows in CA. I would think that the audience is from CA also. I wonder if the audience was given cue cards to laugh about the 2 pot growers that were on the show yesterday.

We grow a lot of things that other states don’t grow. Oranges are grown here. I do not hear about people laughing because we grow oranges. I think we should be treated with respect.

Trayvon Martin’s manner of death

Trayvon Martin is the 17-year-old youth who was killed by George Zimmerman (a 28-year-old man). This happened on February 26, 2012.

There is a Death Investigation proceeding. From a forensic nurse perspective, I want to know if this is a criminal or noncriminal homicide. It appears the local law enforcement agency is considering it a pending noncriminal homicide while an investigation is ongoing. This does not mean that it cannot be changed to a criminal homicide later.

With the U.S. Justice Department looking into this case, it will take longer to find a conclusion. Also with emotions very strong across the country, a conclusion will not be quick.

Child Abuse Reporting for Non-Nurses

This is valuable information to pass on to those who do not know how to report child abuse. Sadly and unfortunately, child abuse is more common than we want to think. Children of all ages and all races are subjected to this terrible act. There are several types of child abuse: physical, neglect, sexual, emotional and verbal; each one having a long lasting affect if not turning deadly.

If you suspect that a child is being abused in any way, you must contact the authorities immediately. The sooner you report it and save a child the better their future is. Many children of abuse later repeat their abuse onto others, including their own children. It’s time to end the cycle and help those who cannot help themselves.

You may be wary about reporting the abuse because of several reasons: “The family will know it was you, what if I am wrong and it’s none of my business.” All reporting is anonymous and if you are correct about the child abuse chances are you have saved that child. You may think it is none of your business but by law if you suspect anything and do not report it, you could be at fault. Here are a few statistics about child abuse from www.childhelp.org:

A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds
More than five children die every day as a result of child abuse
About 30% of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children, continuing the horrible cycle of abuse.
Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education

If you are approached by the child there are a few things to keep in mind when they are sharing their story of abuse with you. React calmly, news like this startling to hear but if the child senses you are uncomfortable they will stop. Do not ask too many questions; let them tell you, even if it is just a little bit of information. Once they have done this reassure them that they have not done anything wrong. Then report it immediately.

I recently got a Kindle Fire for my husband for Christmas. I thought that he would really like it because he could put his PDF journal articles on it. He has a huge stack of articles that he always totes around with him. His book bag gets so heavy, I honestly worry about his back health! That thing must weigh fifty pounds after he loads it up! Anyway, he ended up not really loving the Kindle Fire. He says that it is too small to see the screen and he is more interested in getting an iPad. So he basically gave me his Kindle Fire. I think that it is a great e-reader. I have downloaded several books using my clearwirelessinternet connection. The other thing that I really like about the Kindle Fire and what is better than reading a paper book is the dictionary function. If there is a word that I don’t know the meaning of, I don’t just skim over it and try to figure out the meeting, I just tap the word and the definition pops up! I wish I had one of these when I was a kid. I think that my vocabulary has expounded recently because of the Kindle Fire!

Lifescript, heathy living for women (review)

I reviewed women’s health within lifescript.com. This site loads quickly and is full of helpful information. The topics include health; diet & fitness; food; life; soul. One area that caught my attention is “Community.” I clicked on the latest comment, “Preventing a Hospital Infection and Other Mishaps.” The author name is given and the comment is reviewed by a medical doctor. I like what the author has written. And I like the fact that readers can make comments. What I do not like is the method of turning pages. We as readers have to click on the “next” link to turn the page. I prefer to be able to scroll down the pages.

I also reviewed women’s health centers within www.lifescript.com/health/centers.aspx. This sub-site deals with topics listed by alphabetical order. Each topic appears to have a video connected. I clicked on the Heart Attack link. The new page contains lots of helpful information. I clicked on the video link. It loads quickly and contain helpful facts.

Overall, I enjoyed reviewing the 2 sites with their respective sub-pages. There appears to be too much advertising on both sites. This advertising relates to the topics, but it is distracting from the main content.

Documentation

Documentation is critically important in obtaining any type of encounter in the ED, but yesterday I had the opportunity to apply what I have learned in the coursework to the fullest. My patient was a fifteen month old who was accompanied by her mother. The child was brought in for head injury. Her behavior was appropriate for a toddler, smiling and interacting with both mom, and me and very active. She was cooperative with the triage. Mom was concerned about the abrasion over her left eye and ecchymotic area under that eye which she stated had happened 2 days prior when the child had fallen off the couch and hit her head on the coffee table. She denied LOC, vomiting or lethargy and stated her activity level had been the usual state. On further exam, I noted a three cm ecchymotic area over the left sphenoid which could be consistent with the fall, but it troubled me that she also had ecchymosis lateral to the right eye, petechial contusions to the inner auricle of the right ear but none on the pinna and also noted pinpoint abrasions to the right occiput. This did not seem consistent with the story. I asked mom about these and she stated that “She is just learning to walk and falls a lot.” A fifteen month old is usually walking fairly well, and running unless developmentally delayed, which she seemed to be bright and happy, so this troubled me. However, since triage was busy and it is not the function of triage to document all findings but just identify them, I marked her as urgent and notated my suspicions of abuse due to the inconsistency. Later, when I got off triage, I took over this patient and got to interact with the police investigator and county child protective worker who had been called. The doctor felt that the findings were consistent with abuse and a report was filed with immediate action taken. I measured all the areas and took photographs and logged them as well as documenting all the individuals and actions we had taken. The child was CT’d which thankfully was negative. The mother had admitted that she had left the child alone with her significant other on a number of occasions. The investigator felt he had enough evidence to make an arrest. The child was released to the custody of the mother and her parents. This story had a happy outcome but I still feel troubled by it. How can a person abuse a sweet innocent toddler? How can the mother allow this? Aside from that, she was so benign about the whole matter and practically lied to me about it in triage. As a mother and patient advocate, this boils my blood. CDC and Healthy Aging

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a very nice website. Their mottos are saving lives, protecting people, and saving money through prevention.

The CDC.gov has a subpage titled Healthy Aging. It is packed with information (too much for my seniors). I see Health Aging Topics with a dozen links to topics. I see Interactive Data Tools with its 3 links. There is a Listserv link. There is also contact information.

I am especially interested in subtopics related to senior citizens. I clicked on the “More” link for Enhancing Use of Clinical Preventive Services Among Older Adults: Closing the Gap. It took me to the CDC Features subpage. I see “Clinical Preventive Services for Older Adults.” From here, I see a link to “Injury, Violence, and Safety.” It is not very clear and user-friendly the way the sub-paging is laid out.

Now, I am at CDC Features and subpage Injury, Violence, and Safety. I realize this new page is a general page and not the older adults page. However, I see topics of interest such as Older Drivers (2 separate editions), Elder Abuse (2 separate editions), and Fall Risks for Older Adults.

Even with the CDC site being very large, it can still be made user-friendly, especially for the seniors.

Senior citizens may also be interested in Medicare Supplemental Insurance.
